WHO BY WATER

  • Bill Morrison

Joy and expectation, fear and hesitation are shown in the faces of the passengers that, in Who By Water, are preparing for their departure. Some of them wave full of hope at those they leave behind, some others pose in front of the camera; and then there are some that just stand on deck of the massive ocean liner, rigidly starring towards the destiny that awaits them. The images of the people in the windows are like film frames that slowly pass the eye of the observer. The grand score by Michael Gordon chimes appropriate for the occasion. A sinister feeling of threat arises. The veracity of one’s own mortality superimposes itself onto the pale, brittle images – conceived as a memento mori for us as well? Whether moments of happiness or touch of death, farewell or new beginning, the end of the journey is uncertain.
