THE DOCKWORKER'S DREAM

  • Bill Morrison

Portugal in the 1920s? Perhaps even earlier. A dream? Or simply notes from a life as it unfolds in the factories, on the streets and at the harbour. Plus, a safari. Or could it possibly be seen as a metaphor for the hunt for images that Morrison set out to find in the archives of the Cinemateca Portuguesa in Lissabon? The answer is always both. Arranged in an associative collage by the artist, the highly weathered documentary footage from the Portuguese collections relate to the world they depict as much as to the process of archaeological excavation that Morrison has put at the heart of his art. Wrapped in a tapestry of word and sound created by Lampchop’s galvanizing electro beats, the bold montage soon develops an increasingly strong energy that is hard to resist.
