A METAMORFOSE DOS PÁSSAROS

  • Catarina Vasconcelos

A movie like a still life - no, like an entire gallery. Every shot is a work of art, every moment an eternity. It tells the story of the sailor Henrique and his wife Beatriz, who, separated by the sea and united in thought, share a life that produces six children and - at least in retrospect - seems perfect. It is the voices of the surviving relatives that provide a posthumous insight into their relationship, into the past and into a world that is profoundly shaped both by the supernatural power and beauty of nature and by the much too early death - that of Beatriz, but also that of the wife of their eldest son Jacinto, the director's mother.

In her feature film debut, Portuguese filmmaker Catarina Vasconcelos and her father rekindle the love of their grandparents without betraying it. In fine, almost magical arrangements from the border area of documentary and fiction, philosophy and poetry, an intimate portrait of a family between then and now, memory and grief, reality and fantasy emerges, which cannot be fully explained in its virtuosity, but can only be marveled at with alert eyes.
