FIREWORK, WEDNESDAY

  • Asghar Farhadi

In order to be able to afford the upcoming weddings, Rouhi works as a cleaning maid for a well-off family of the Iranian bourgeoisie. One day when she reaches their apartment, its inhabitants are quarreling. Mojdeh believes that her husband Morteza is having an affair with their neighbor Simin. As the day goes on, more and more people become involved in their squabbling…

Mani Haghighi has written the script for this film together with Oscar winner and longtime “subscriber” of the Cannes Competitions Ashgar Farhadi. Farhadi has developed into the most important as well as the most commercially successful analyst of the Iranian middle class – this one section of the population in which one perceives the contradictions and the peculiarities of this country and its sociopolitical disposition more clearly than in others. This collaboration is very important to Mani Haghighi, who co-wrote the script with Ashgar Farhadi. Maybe for the very reason that his tone is so very different; it is much closer to the classic notion of realism, moderately balanced, maybe also a little bit more melancholic.
