Shortly after their first encounter at a party, Jonas and Agnete sit alone in a room and get physically closer - until a noise destroys the intimate atmosphere: Toke has done something crazy, once again. This is how things continue for the next few years: After a while, the two do find each other, but their togetherness is constantly put to new tests - until the bond between them is too frayed to keep them together ...
A semi-official sequel to Tree of Knowledge, set in Viborg in the early 1960s, in which the characters have different names but the same real-life role models (to give just one example: Helge from Tree of Knowledge and Toke from Aching Hearts (Kærestesorger) are both inspired by a certain Niels Holm-Nielsen, who, judging by a TV documentary about Malmros, remains an exceptionally nasty person to this day ...). Aching Hearts, like its predecessor filmed over several (this time three) years, is, however, much more relaxed and fluid in an excellently classical way, cheerful and cruel in a mature way, but also more forgiving.
